Frome were dealt a heavy defeat in their opening match of the league season in the Somerset League Division 4.

After the hosts won the toss and elected to bat, they made some good early progress after some speradic bowling.

However, Frome faught their way back into the match. First, Mat Bracher (2-28) picked up a brace of scalps- including the dangerous M Tilley. This was followed by an LBW from Aaron Woodruff, and the match was back in the balance.

Curry steadily rebuilt though, with D Higginson (67) and P Higginson (38) putting on a partnership that ultimately was the telling factor. And even though the Frome attack were relatively economic, Curry were heading towards a decent score on a difficult wicket to bat on.

Despite some poor fielding in places, including a few costly drops- the Showman battled back. Josh Cantrell (1-29) created numerous chances with his bowling, and picked up a deserved wicket with a sharp stumping from the evergreen Clive Copp.

In the last few overs Frome managed to get two more wickets, one well caught by James Mawson in the deep off of Woodruff (2-34) and the other a run out from Cantrell.

This saw Curry Rivel conclude their 45 over allocation on 187-7, seeing Frome take seven bowling points from the innings.

What seemed a par score at half time, didn't turn out the be the case in the second innings. The pitch became difficult to bat on, and Frome collapsed to a 100 run defeat.

After some watchful batting from Cantrell and Woodruff, Curry got their first wicket when the latter was bowled.

This was followed by a moment of misfortune for the visitors, as when Joseph Quinn powered the ball down the ground, a fingertip from the bowler left Cantrell out of his ground- run out for 16.

Wickets then continued to tumble- skipper Quinn (2), James Unwin (5), Bracher (8) and Mawson (0) being dismissed.

A mini revival was on the cards when Craig Dredge (18) and Clive Hamblin played some pleasant strokes. However, a fantastic catch ro remove Dredge made Frome's chances of victory even slimmer.

Ethan Cox and Shane Ford failed to score, before Clive Copp was the last wicket to fall for 1- leaving Hamblin unbeaten on 17.

Wickets were shared amongst the Curry attack, with C Hamlett (3-12), H Wilkes (2-12) and D Higginson (2-25) doing the damage.

It was a poor start to the campaign for the 2nd XI, however there's plenty of time to rectify the wrong's- no better place to do so is next Saturday when Castle Cary visit Fromefield.
