Clive Hamblin produced a match winning unbeaten 36 to guide Frome 2nd XI to a victory that sees them attain top spot in Somerset League Division 4.

The Somerset over-50's player's performance also included a classy 1-10 from nine overs in the most notable Frome performance of the day.

After Frome captain Craig Dredge won the toss, he opted to insert he hosts to bat. Frome made a positive start in the field.

Aaron Woodruff (0-8) was economical from five overs, whilst opening partner Mat Bracher (1-19) made an early breakthrough when he had Acreman taken at slip by Hamblin.

Then after the skipper came into the attack, Frome got their second wicket with a leg before.

Some tough chances and unfortunate decisions gave the hosts a boost though, and Alex Pickford was aggressive from the off.

After some lusty blows though, his knock was curtailed when Lee Dredge took a superb catch on the run off of Mark Harman's (3-33) bowling.

Frome then rattled through the rest of the order, with Harman and Hamblin's experienced spin doing the damage. Although, opening batsmen Adam Young offered resistance for South Petherton.

He launched some superb shots over long-off for six, but he eventually holed out to Mark Harman off Arthur Harman's (2-23) spin.

Craig Dredge (2-29) returned to take a second wicket, before Daniel Weston had the last wicket held at cover to secure maximum bowling points for the visitors.

The hosts ultimately posted 126, all out with the first ball of the 43rd over.

In reply, Frome looked to show patience and attrition in chasing down the opponents total. The in-form Josh Cantrell plinked a catch to mid-off early on though.

Lee Dredge joined Dan Dredge and showed further patience before the latter found long-off to depart for 27.

Clive Hamblin and Lee then were faced with tight bowling that was difficult to get away, but Dredge edged behind for 22.

Craig Dredge (10) and Mat Bracher (9) contributed in scoring runs at a faster tempo as time was running out for Frome, whilst Woodruff scored 1; Frome were now six wickets down though.

Hamblin was a constant throughout the innings though and he held his cool with Mark Harman, who after finding it difficult to get the ball away- found the winning runs.

This low-scoring game went down to the wire, with five runs required for victory in the last over. After a single from Hamblin and a dot ball, pressure was building with four needed from four balls.

However, Harman (7 not out) held his composure excellently as he advanced down the wicket to send the ball sailing over wide long-off for six to give the visitors a four wicket victory.

Now top of league after overtaking South Petherton with the maximum point victory, Frome 2nd XI host Fitzhead next Saturday at Fromefield.
