Frome 2nd Xl’s best bowling and fielding performance of the season saw them cruise to an 8 wicket victory over 4th placed side South Petherton at Fromefield last Saturday, the match kindly sponsored by Terry Carter.
After losing an hour to rain, Frome skipper Mark Harman won the toss and elected to bowl. The decision came up trumps with openers Matt Bracher and Matt Knight, with the aid of some sharp fielding behind the wicket, picking up three wickets apiece and reducing the visitors to 41 for 6.
The late order batsmen dug in against the change bowlers with David Dredge bowling a miserly nine overs conceding just 12 runs. No.9, J. Edmunds hit 22 before another excellent catch, this time by Arthur Harman off Mark Harman at long on and with two suicidal run outs, South Petherton were eventually bowled out for 90 in the 43rd over.
In reply, openers Tim Leonard and Josh Cantrell took the total to 59 in the 14th over when Leonard was caught on the long on boundary for 36.
This was followed soon after when Cantrell was bowled for 19 but there were no other alarms as Lee Dredge and David Dredge with 20 not out and 14 not out passed the visitors total in the 23rd over to give the home side a maximum points victory.
This weekend, Frome travel to Fitzhead for their final game of the season knowing that all scenarios are possible. Victory will secure the minimum of a promotion spot but a win for Kilve over leaders Broadway & Horton could result in winning the title. A loss could mean third place and remaining in Division 4 for the 2017 season, but we don’t want to talk about that!
