A Good workout

Frome 2nd XI lost to Warminster 2nd XI by 5 wickets

Frome 2s: 165 All Out (39.5 overs)

Warminster 2s: 166-5 (31.4 overs)

Frome 2s pre-season came to a close on Saturday with a home loss against neighbors Warminster 2s. Despite the defeat the Showmen can take several positives from a competitive afternoon, with key batsmen spending good time in the middle and all the bowlers getting much needed overs in their legs.

After losing the toss Frome were invited to bat first, with openers Potter and Jon Dredge battling hard in a solid stand of 45 for the first wicket. However, the introduction of Carpenter (4-39) bore immediate fruit for the visitors – taking 3 wickets in a flash to reduce the Showmen to 49-3.

With excellent support from Cox (21) and Ethan Smart (15), Jon Dredge stood firm to rebuild the innings, registering a composed first half-century of the season to lift Frome to 116-4. However, upon his dismissal for a fluent 59, followed by a superb triple-wicket maiden over from Ellis (4-25), the Showmen lost 4 wickets without adding to the scoreboard. Some lusty blows from Neil Dredge (29*) helped add some much needed runs for the last two wickets, boosting Frome to 165 all out at the interval.

In response a superb piece of fielding from Brown to run out Collier got Frome off to a great start, and when Cox dismissed Malik with a superb yorker Warminster were left with work to do at 46-2. Silva (43) and Tull (37*) then combined expertly to lead the visitors away from danger and gradually asserted control for Warminster.

Frome’s bowlers stuck to their task well with Brown, Neil Dredge and the returning Edwards striking for the hosts. However a series of boundaries in quick succession from Davie (20*) saw the visitors over the line for a solid 5-wicket win.

All in all a good pre-season for Frome who will look to hit the ground running when the league season commences next weekend away to Shapwick & Polden.

Next Fixture: Saturday 7th May – Shapwick & Polden 2s (away) - 13:00 st
