Bath Swords were too good for the Frome Falcons on Friday, despite an excellent Joe Smart 47.

After the Falcons elected to bat first, Joe Smart and Sam Croker were watchful for the hosts in what was a circumspect start; the score was poised at 24 without loss after the six over powerplay.

The successful opening pair this campaign, carried the score onto 64, before Croker (14 from 23 balls), was bowled by the spin of Will Arnie.

Smart soon followed just shy of his half-century, caught at long-off from M Gregg's bowling. He got going nicely as his innings progressed, ultimately scoring his 47 at a good rate- off 44 deliveries. The innings included 4 fours and a brace of maximums.

And then when Paddy Hyams and skipper Mark Watts were dismissed without scoring, the Falcons were 70-4. Watts was caught and bowled to Arnie, who took (2-21).

Dan Lock has been impressive this year, and he along with Aaron Woodruff added 27 for the fifth wicket to stop the rot. However, after launching a six high over deep square-leg, Lock was stumped to Nathan Gregg (3-21) for 14 from 12 balls.

With the score on 120, Woodruff edged Harry Hankins through to keeper Jack Scrivens for 21 (from 23 balls), in the 19th over.

Matt Knight struggled to get the ball away (8 from 19 balls), as he along with Taylor Angell (2) were not out at the close of the 20 overs. This saw the Falcons conclude on 125-7, a valiant effort against a testing Swords bowling unit.

In response, openers Ben Wells and Scrivens showed their class as they advanced relatively auspiciously to 55-0 in the six over powerplay.

Frome bowlers tried to best to make the breakthrough, and Croker (0-18) was unfortunate not to have Scrivens' wicket to his name when a catch was shelled at square-leg.

The left-hander was finally dismissed for 46 (from 30 balls) with the score on 84 though when sharp work from wicket-keeper Hyams stumped, handed Woodruff (1-14) a scalp. Scrivens struck 4 fours and blitzed two sixes in his knock.

With the score on 100, the introduction of Dan Weston (1-16) paid dividends when he sent Jack Dancey packing for 9, when further good work from Hyams ensured he attained his second stumping. Weston then kept the squeeze on to bowl a wicket-maiden over.

There was one more wicket for the Falcons when Lock gave wicketkeeper a Hyams a catch with an edge behind, removing Hankins for a duck.

However, 24 runs for the fourth wicket ensured that Bath completed a relatively comfortable 7 wicket victory. Wells batted through the innings for an unbeaten 44, whilst Matt Caddywould was also not out on 12. Wells hit six boundary fours, in an innings that came from 48 deliveries.

There are so many people that need to be thanked for ensuring that this match was a great occasion. The volunteers scoring, umpiring, manning the barbeque, arranging the music, helping set up and prepare the pitch- there is a whole host of people that grouped together to make not only this match, but the past three Falcons home matches, a real spectacle.

Special thanks go to the Westway Co-Op for supplying the buns for last nights barbeque at a very generous rate.

The Falcons are far from down and out just yet though. They travel to Kilmington Eagles next Friday, in a match that may well decide whether one of the two qualification places is attained by the Falcons.
