Frome stormed to a rapid victory at Fromefield on Saturday as a ruthless spell from Sam Wheeler blew away Burnham-on-Sea. A welcome 35 points sent the Showmen joint top of the table, keeping them well in the hunt for promotion as the season approaches half-way.
On a hot sunny day the visitors won the toss and duly elected to bat first. Yet again Frome hit the ground running with the ball, Asim and Wheeler finding their lines and lengths immediately. Their unerring accuracy suffocated the Burnham openers, and it was no surprise when Wheeler claimed the first breakthrough – castling House in the 3rdover.
Without a bad ball in sight the pair continued to probe full and straight and as the pressure built Wheeler (6-13) reaped the rewards – his 9 overs off the belt snaring Burnham’s top six to leave the innings in tatters at 17-6. A brief period of respite followed as the visitors’ lower order tried to rebuild, however Frome kept chipping away and when Collis (2-14) saw off the tail Burnham had crumbled to 54 all out.
After an early tea Burnham took an early scalp as Leonard edged behind, however Potter plodded along and Pinchen (39*) punished the loose deliveries on offer to ease Frome to an early 9-wicket victory and a maximum points haul. A tough afternoon for the depleted visitors but a ruthless, professional display from Frome was rightly celebrated with some Thatchers in the late afternoon sunshine.
Results elsewhere saw Frome climb up and share top spot with Trull, bringing a new sense of excitement and rise in expectations. However, with a long way to go and many twists and turns likely to come the Showmen will aim to keep their feet on the ground and keep playing the standard of cricket which has served them well thus far. Another strong showing will be required at Long Sutton next week to keep the winning run going.
Still… it’s not every day you go top of the league alphabetically.…. Cheers!
