Frome 2s league season began in disappointing fashion on Saturday, with a convincing defeat at home to Ilminster. On a cold afternoon Frome were invited to bat first and immediately fell into trouble against the discipline and movement of the Ilminster openers.
An impressive opening burst form House left the Showmen reeling at 22-4, a position from which they never really recovered. Jon Dredge and debutant Ian Pinchen threatened to drag the home side out of the mire, however another clatter of wickets left Frome floundering at 55-8.Some lower order resistance from Wheeler, Prince and Mark Harman, aided by a healthy extras contribution, managed to eek the score past the hundred mark –however when Prince played on for 16 the innings was wrapped up for a well below-par 105.
In reply Ilminster started confidently, racing to 45-0 with a flurry of boundaries. However a double strike from Wheeler(2-21) – including an eye-catching caught and bowled –halted their progress and gave Frome a faint glimmer of hope. Spinners Veal and Arthur Harman then showed great discipline to bring the innings to an almost standstill with some tight lines and lengths.
This impressive period of pressure paid dividends when Towill chipped a return catch back to Harman, and at 58-3 a gutsy fightback was on. However Vining and man-of-the-match House showed great determination to battle through this spell and see Ilminster over the line for a convincing win.
A bad day at the office for Frome with a lot of hard work to come. A tough game away at Trull next week provides the perfect opportunity for the batsmen to rediscover some formand get the season back on track.
